Our story
Willunga Waldorf School opened on 15 March 1989, when founding teacher Marita Huxholl welcomed eight children to a kindergarten in a local community hall and lit the first ‘story candle’ with the hope of one day building a full school from kindergarten to Class 12. The school grew on the site of a former almond orchard just outside Willunga, about 40 kilometres south of Adelaide, and many of the original trees are still there. It marked 30 years in 2019, the same year Waldorf education celebrated its centenary worldwide.
It is one of only two independent Waldorf (Steiner) schools in South Australia, with about 420 students from playgroup and kindergarten to Class 12. Teaching follows the Australian Steiner Curriculum Framework, and Class 12 follows the South Australian Senior Waldorf Curriculum, developed with Mount Barker Waldorf School. A new high school building opened in 2020, and dual-stream junior classes began in 2024.
