Westminster was the Methodist Church’s answer to growing demand for places beyond Prince Alfred College. Planning began in 1957, 25 acres of vineyard were bought at Marion, and volunteers known as “the Men of Westminster” raised $320,000. Prime Minister Robert Menzies opened the school, named after Westminster School in London, which began on 7 February 1961 with 143 students and a staff of seven.
Through the 1960s came a boarding house, prep school, chapel and gym. The school became co-educational in 1978, and since 1977 it has been part of the Uniting Church. Today Westminster is a Uniting Church co-ed day and boarding school from early learning to Year 12 at Marion, with about 1,401 students (2025).
