Where it sits among Adelaide schools

Walford began in 1893 in Fisher Street, Malvern, in the home of its first headmistress, Lydia Adamson. Ellen Ida Benham bought the school in 1912 and led it until her death in 1917, when senior teacher Mabel Jewell Baker took over. In 1920 the boarders moved into a property at Hyde Park, and the school later followed them there.
By the time Miss Baker retired in 1955 there were 450 students and a well-established boarding house. In 1956 Walford was incorporated as a Church of England girls’ grammar school, with Nina Morrison OBE as its first salaried headmistress. Today it is an Anglican girls’ day and boarding school from early learning to Year 12 at Hyde Park, one of the smaller schools here with about 400 students (2025). The IB Primary Years Programme runs in the junior school.
