St Peter’s is South Australia’s oldest independent school. Colonists meeting at Holy Trinity Church in February 1847 planned a proprietary school for boys, and the Church of England Collegiate School of South Australia opened on 15 July 1847 with 11 pupils and one teacher. Bishop Augustus Short bought land at Hackney in 1848, and classes moved there in 1850.
Boarding began formally in 1853, the chapel opened in 1864 and a separate preparatory school followed in 1910. Memorial Hall, built to honour those who served in the First World War, opened in 1929, and the Big Quad precinct is on the SA Heritage Register. Former students include the Nobel laureates Lawrence Bragg, Howard Florey and Robin Warren. Today it is an Anglican boys’ day and boarding school from the early years to Year 12, with about 1,585 students (2025).
