St Michael’s began after the Second World War, when demand for Catholic schooling was growing in Adelaide’s west. The parish priest of Hindmarsh established a school at Allenby Gardens and invited the De La Salle Brothers to run it. Classes started on 9 February 1954 with three Brothers and 29 boys, in maroon and blue chosen for the Sacred Heart and Our Lady.
Enrolments passed 200 by 1957 and the school soon bought an adjoining two-acre block. It has since grown into the largest of the schools we cover, with about 2,193 students (2025), and it is now co-educational, though it started as a boys’ school. Today it is a Catholic college in the Lasallian tradition, from Reception to Year 12, across two campuses: primary at Beverley and secondary at Henley Beach.
