In August 1883, Mother Rose Columba Adams and a group of Dominican Sisters arrived in North Adelaide from Stone in Staffordshire, England, invited to take on nursing work. After a difficult start they opened St Dominic’s Priory College in Molesworth Street in February 1884.
For 90 years it was also a boarding school for girls (1884 to 1974), and young boys attended the day school in the early years (Reception to Year 2) until 2006. Sr Jillian Havey OP led the college from 1971 to 2019 and oversaw several major redevelopments; the Year 12 centre opened in 2019 bears her name. Today St Dominic’s is a Catholic girls’ day school from Reception to Year 12 on its original North Adelaide site, with about 658 students (2025). Its motto is the Dominican “Veritas” (Truth).
