Our story
Rostrevor College was founded by the Christian Brothers in 1923 to take the overflow of boarders from Christian Brothers College in Wakefield Street. Under its first headmaster, Brother Purton, the first students arrived on 6 May 1923 and the boarders lived on the top floor of Rostrevor House, a mansion built in 1858. For its first two decades it was run as a second campus of CBC, and it became Rostrevor College in its own right in 1943.
The chapel and the Murray Gates date from 1939, and a wartime dormitory of 1941 is now the Mary Fountain Music Centre. Junior classes from Reception to Year 2 began in 1998, the first lay headmaster was appointed in 2003, and the college marked its centenary in 2023. The annual ‘Intercol’ against Sacred Heart College dates back to 1923. Today Rostrevor is a Catholic boys’ day and boarding school in the Edmund Rice tradition, from Reception to Year 12, in the red and black.
