Emmaus began in 1979 as Bethesda Christian School, with 29 students and three teachers. From 1982 it shared a campus with Vermont High, which gave it access to specialist facilities, and its first Year 12 class graduated in 1984. When Vermont High closed in 1988, Bethesda shared the site with Tabor Adelaide, and a capital grant in 1996 let the school buy the property.
Governance passed to Tabor Adelaide in 2002 and the school became Tabor Christian College, before taking the name Emmaus Christian College in 2010 when its own board took full responsibility. The name comes from the Emmaus road story in Luke 24. A second campus opened at Brooklyn Park in 2020. Today it is a non-denominational Christian, co-educational school from Reception to Year 12, based at South Plympton, with about 1,084 students (2025).
