Our story
Christian Brothers College grew out of the work of the Christian Brothers, the order Edmund Rice founded in Waterford, Ireland, in 1802. In Adelaide, Brother Ambrose Treacy led the fundraising for a Catholic boys’ school that could also take boys from the country, and CBC opened in Wakefield Street in 1878. The founders chose purple as the school colour, a colour once reserved for royalty, as a sign that every boy could wear ‘the colour of kings’ whatever his background.
More than 140 years on, CBC is still a city school. It has grown to three campuses in the City of Adelaide and is part of Edmund Rice Education Australia, the network of schools that continues the Christian Brothers’ tradition. Today it is a Catholic boys’ day school from Reception to Year 12, with about 1,000 students.
