History

Seymour College

Seymour College opened in 1922 as Presbyterian Girls’ College, with about 100 girls across five year levels and the Reverend Dr Herbert Postle as its first principal. Its home at Glen Osmond centres on Barr Smith House, a mansion built in 1861 as Wootton Lea, which over the years has housed boarders, art classes, swimming lessons and principals.

Wilderness School

Wilderness began in 1884, when Margaret Hamilton Brown started a small school in her parents’ home, with her youngest sister Mamie among the first five pupils. A kindergarten based on Friedrich Froebel’s ideas followed, and in 1893 Margaret bought a building on Northcote Terrace for a school she later named “The Wilderness”.
